    Explain common woodworking hazards and demonstrate how to prevent and respond to injuries such as cuts, splinters, severe bleeding, eye injury, and shock.

    Explain when and why eye, hearing, and dust protection are required during woodworking tasks.

    Get ready — gather what you need.

    Describe how lumber is produced, including harvesting, milling, seasoning, grading, and sizing, and explain why these steps matter in a project.

    Identify at least six types of wood commonly used in carpentry and explain the best use for each.

  3. Step 3 · ACT

    Act

    Do the work, in the real world.

    Demonstrate proper care, safe use, and storage of common woodworking tools.

    • Show correct handling of saws, chisels, planes, and striking tools
    • Demonstrate safe tool storage after use
    • Explain why dull or damaged tools increase danger

    Sharpen and prepare two different cutting tools for safe and effective use.

    • Select appropriate sharpening method for each tool
    • Demonstrate correct angle and pressure
    • Test sharpness safely

    Build a useful wooden item using measured layouts and hand tools.

    • Lay out measurements from working drawings
    • Cut and fit parts accurately
    • Assemble the project so it is functional and square

    Complete an advanced carpentry task involving joinery, shaping, or service.

    • Build a project with joints, curves, or moving parts OR
    • Participate in a woodworking service project approved by the leader

    Reflect

    Look back and see what changed.

    Explain what you learned about patience, precision, and responsibility while working with wood and tools.

    Describe how carpentry skills can be used to serve others or prepare for future work or service.
