Classical Heritage

From Discover to Reflect

Every Saints Global badge follows the same arc — learn it, plan it, do it, then reflect on what changed.

  1. Step 1 · DISCOVER

    Discover

Learn what this badge is really about.

Read Doctrine and Covenants 98:5–7 and explain why moral agency, law, and accountability must be grounded in righteousness to preserve freedom.

Identify ten common English words used in daily life or government that come from Greek or Latin roots. Write the root meaning and explain how it clarifies the word’s modern use.

Study one Greek and one Roman influence on governance (such as citizenship, republic, senate, rule of law, or civic duty). Explain what problem each was trying to solve and where it succeeded or failed.

  2. Step 2 · PLAN

    Plan

Get ready — gather what you need.

Create a 5–7 day study plan to learn 20 Greek or Latin roots commonly used in law, government, or scripture. Include review and application methods.

Choose one United States founding document or governing principle and plan a focused study showing its influences.

    • Identify the classical Greek or Roman influence.
    • Identify the biblical or gospel-aligned principle involved.
    • Explain why moral character is required for this principle to function properly.

Plan a short lesson or guided discussion you will later lead explaining how Jesus Christ’s gospel strengthens self-government more effectively than law alone.

  3. Step 3 · ACT

    Act

Do the work, in the real world.

Complete your Greek and Latin root study and demonstrate understanding by correctly defining 20 modern English words derived from those roots, including at least five civic or legal terms.

Create a comparison chart showing how classical ideas, United States governance, and gospel principles intersect in at least five areas such as justice, liberty, authority, citizenship, or accountability.

Study a statement from a United States Founder concerning virtue, morality, or religion. Explain how the statement aligns with restored gospel teachings and where the gospel provides greater clarity.

Teach a 10–15 minute lesson or lead a discussion for your patrol or family explaining one classical idea, how it shaped American government, and why Jesus Christ’s gospel is essential for its success.

Apply your learning by identifying five places where Greek or Latin influence appears in scriptures, laws, or public life, and explain how understanding the roots deepens meaning.

  4. Step 4 · REFLECT

    Reflect

Look back and see what changed.

Write a reflection of at least 250 words explaining how classical wisdom prepared the world for greater truth and why human reason alone is insufficient without the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Share a testimony or written commitment describing how you will use knowledge, virtue, and faith to strengthen your family, community, and country.
